biography

Through PET portraits, Carol Hillson combines her passion for portrait painting with her love for pets and animals to offer you a unique opportunity to own an original PET portrait - a work of art that captures and honors, on canvas, a moment in the life of your pet and animal friend.

Carol has been painting and drawing since she was a child. She has lived with and loved animals her whole life. And she has specialized in painting animal portraits and PET portraits since 2003.

Carol is an accomplished artist and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. She has studied with a variety of artists including Frank Mason at the Art Students League, and Melissa Harris. Her pet portraits capture the character of her pet and animal subjects as well as their likeness.

Carol works from her painting studio in New York City. She lives in Upper Manhattan with her husband Gary and their cockateil Lucy Tara-Anna-Saurus.

artist's statement

What is most important to me in creating an animal portrait or pet portrait is capturing the personality, as well as the likeness of your pet. Equally important is that the finished product be a sophisticated portrait and work of art in its own right. I believe paintings have their own life. As a painter I do not control this, I merely discover it. When I’ve been successful at my job, the life of the painting, as well as that of the subject – in this case your pet or animal – becomes palpable.
